Flat Roof Insulation

Working Together

What Is Flat Roof Insulation?

Flat roof insulation adds a layer of insulation to a flat roof to help stop heat escaping through the roof. It is often used on extensions, garages, porches and other parts of the home with a flat roof above. By improving insulation in this area, it can help keep the room below warmer in colder weather and more comfortable during warmer months.

Energy Saving Trust explains that roof insulation reduces heat loss through the roof, and for flat roofs it is ideally installed from above. This is often known as a “warm roof” system, where rigid insulation boards are added above the roof structure and below the waterproof layer.

What to expect

Before any work starts, your roof will usually be checked to make sure it is suitable and in good condition. The survey may look for signs of damp, damage or moisture build-up, and help decide the best way to insulate the roof. In many cases, insulation is fitted above the roof surface, then finished with a waterproof layer on top.

In some situations, insulation may be fitted from inside, but this needs to be carefully designed because poorly installed insulation underneath a flat roof can increase the risk of condensation. Because flat roof insulation is more specialist, professional installation is normally needed.

All materials used meet the latest UK fire safety and building regulation standards.

Benefits to Flat Roof Insulation

  • Helps reduce heat loss through the roof – Flat roof insulation helps keep warmth inside your home by reducing the amount of heat escaping through the roof.
  • Can make rooms feel warmer and more comfortable – Rooms below flat roofs, such as extensions or converted spaces, can often feel colder. Insulation can help make these areas more comfortable and reduce cold ceilings and cold spots.
  • Helps keep temperatures more stable all year round – Insulation can help keep rooms warmer in winter and may also help reduce overheating in summer, making the space feel more comfortable throughout the year.
  • May help reduce condensation risk – By improving the temperature of surfaces, flat roof insulation can help lower the chance of condensation forming on colder parts of the room or roof.
  • Can improve the comfort of extensions and other flat-roof areas – Flat roof insulation can help extensions, porches and similar spaces feel more like a natural part of the home.
  • Helps reduce energy use and carbon emissions – When your home holds heat more effectively, less energy is needed to keep it warm, which can also help reduce carbon emissions.
